It’s Friends & Family sale time at Banana Republic! And whatever the sale is called at Gap! (Poor Gap, You used to be my #1 and now you’re my #2. Except for jeans. You will always be my #1 for jeans.) I usually know when the Friends & Family sale is approaching because it is like I can feel it coming (and asking the sales associates when it’s happening helps too) so I can scope out things I want to try on in the store, see what’s online that isn’t in store and just generally spend too much time looking at each and every section of their website before I fall asleep. Because I wasn’t on my A-Game this time, it wasn’t until the email showed up in my inbox this morning that I knew that it was happening. So after a meeting and making dinner and before a doctor appointment, I popped in to both Banana Republic and Gap at Chinook Centre in Calgary to take advantage of the 40% off (and 50% off five items if you are lucky enough to have one of their coupon codes). I now present you with super glamorous fitting room selfies taken with my iPhone!
This Zip Front Collarless Boucle Coat was a sleeper. What I mean by this is that I have passed by it on at least two occasions and not touched it. Until tonight. This coat fits like a dream and is gorgeous!
I feel like faux fur vests were totally fall/winter 2015 and feel like this is Banana Republic’s attempt to be cool for fall/winter 2016. I like the way this Faux Fur Vest looks and feels but wish that it was a little less bulky and longer. This Pom Pom Crew Sweater on the other hand not so much. I am wearing the large and it was a little tight in the arms. I like the pom poms but know they aren’t for everyone.
This is a faux fur cardigan. I tried it because it was new since the last time I was in BR and I was honestly just curious. The fit is big – I could have gone down to a medium. The back, FYI, is not faux fur. I would have liked it more if the faux fur was on the back and front. These Avery-Fit Ankle Pants in violet pants fit a little small and accentuated what didn’t need to be accentuated. But they are very comfy and do come in two other colours. The sweater isn’t online so I can’t link to it so if you like it make sure to look for it in store.
This Pleated Floral Print Skirt is almost sold out online and very good reason. The print is unique, it’s a great length for both tall and petite women and the black panels are really interesting. But. Yes, there’s a but. It bunches at the back zipper. I am wearing a size 10 here and wanted to try the 12 but it is already sold out. The 14 was way too big and still bunched up. I was told by a sales associate that another woman tried it on in a different size and had the same issue. I actually bought this skirt but when I tried it on at home I realized that the bunching is just too bad to make it worth it to me. I will sadly be returning this skirt and hope it finds a good home.
A better look at the pleats and the lace inset. Oh, beautiful skirt. Why did you have to bunch up at the zipper?
A break for a fitting room selfie.
And now to Gap! I tried on two pairs of jeans. The lighter ones which are most visible were too small. I have tried so many pairs of Girlfriend jeans and may just have to accept that aren’t cut for curves.
I already have an army green jacket that I wear A LOT from Banana Republic that I got for like $20 (no joke – it was a killer sale deal) and was curious about this Stud Utility Jacket. I tried on the extra large to see how oversize it would be… Maybe I should have tried it in a smaller size because I really like the metal detail but overall the fit just didn’t wow me. I’m wearing it with my own black Gap jeans, J. Crew sweater and Poppy Barley Slip-On Oxfords.
Let me just say that the lighting in Gap fitting rooms is SO much better than in Banana Republic. Banana Republic needs to step up its lighting game big time. This Crazy Strip Merino Wool Been Ribbed Sweater looks better in person but I still didn’t like it enough to buy it. If you are so inclined, you can buy the matching hat, scarf and gloves.
This is the Relaxed Midi Sweater Dress. I like it as a sweater more than as a dress. I am wearing a large here and also tried the extra large. The extra large was much larger and it totally changed the look. So if you want it to be more loose/slouchy, size up. By the way, I am really liking this all black look. Like, a lot.
This Plait Cable Knit Mock-Neck Sweater comes in several colours but I went for the black one. It fits a little large and I wish that I had tried a medium. It has a mock neck which is nice because you don’t get the bulk of a turtleneck. The fabric isn’t super soft but would relax with wear.
Finally, these Stretch 1969 True Skinny Jeans. I am wearing a 32 regular here. Gap apparently doesn’t carry a lot of 32 tall so I will have to order them online… I have a beef with stores that carry petite sizes but not tall. Please, Banana Republic and Gap, carry tall sizes in store so that you can accommodate more of your shoppers instead of forcing us to go online and wait. I love the fit and colour. I highly recommend these jeans.
