I popped in to Banana Republic at Chinook Mall yesterday because it’s like my second home (I think some of the sales people may recognize me…) and just being there makes me happy. And do you know what makes me even more happy? A sale! Starting yesterday and ending on Monday, *almost* everything is 40% off in stores and online in Canada (sorry to my American readers ) using the code BRCFIT. What’s excluded? All BR Picks, BR Monogram and goodies like the leather jacket I have my eye on. I went in purposefully to see what is new, to take some good and some awkward fitting room pics so that I can share them with you. Let’s get going!
When I tried this White Poplin Peplum Tank on I immediately saw its potential as like a blank canvas for statement necklaces and its versatility under suit jackets, leather jackets, jean jackets as well as being a standalone piece. The peplum is a little too peppy but the fit of it is great. I’m wearing the size 12 in this picture. I am afraid of deodorant stains but have come to terms with that the fact that they are pretty inescapable and that’s just the way it is. This went in my buy pile.
I know what you might be thinking. “Sarah, why are you wearing a pyjama top?” Guess what? Button downs that look like pyjamas are in style right now. The material is a little too synthetic for me to 100% love this top but I like the white piping and have really been into navy lately. The more I look at this photo, the more I like the shirt. I’m wearing a size large here and would say it fits true to size.
I’m including this sweater for comedic value. Is it not something that Carlton would wear?! I picked this sweater off the sales floor because I didn’t want to judge a book by a cover and perhaps let me be surprised but my original hunch was correct. This sweater is awful. I can’t imagine it looking good on anyone unfortunately. What were the Banana Republic designers thinking with this? I expect this sweater to be seriously discounted very soon.
Last week I tried on the dress version of this shirt. I was really hopeful that this Jacquard Peplum Tank would redeem the dress but no. I like the dress in this fabric and not this tank but as you will know if you read my last BR post, it was like super duper short. The material is pretty thick and heavy which makes the quality good but I wouldn’t want to wear the dress or this tank in really warm weather because I would melt. The fabric just wouldn’t be breathable. Also, the ‘Y’ design in the centre is just too much for me. The pattern is strong and I feel like it overwhelms me. This is a definite no.
This Embroidered Crepe Blouse had such promise but fell short. I tried it on in the colour above which BR calls ‘Dark Cypress’ as well as the ‘Cocoon’ which is a very lovely way to say cream. The cream was super sheer. So sheer that I personally would only wear it with a camisole or tank top underneath it and I like to be a little risqué sometimes so that says something. The green was nice but what will keep me from purchasing the shirt is the detail on the arms. I found it restricting. It makes me think of Romeo and Juliet. I love romantic-y blouses but this one just didn’t do anything for me. It too shall say in the store and out of my closet.
I LOVE dresses with sleeves. I even wanted my wedding dress to have sleeves but fell in love with a strapless dress… This dress is a great length for someone taller (like MOI!) who often feels a little irritated at the lack of tall sizing in stores. I don’t always want to show off a lot of leg and I actually own several dresses that I wear as shirts. #TallGirlProblems. The fabric of this navy Midi Shirtdress is light and flowy. This dress is also an all-season dress meaning you can wear it with tights when it’s cooler and ankle boots and go sans tights in the summer paired with an espadrille. It moves with you which is nice because structured dresses are extremely popular – have been and always will be – and sometimes it’s nice to still be dressed up but a little relaxed. Like you can have the bread and the pasta and not be worried about the consequences. The belt hits right at the waist so it emphasizes the smallest part of my body so it creates a great shape. This dress is a little pricey but with the 40% off it’s reasonable. This dress came home with me.
I took several pictures of this dress and this was the best one. I can’t even tell you it’s name or link to it because it isn’t showing up on the Banana Republic website which is more than strange considering it’s a new arrival and not on permanent sale. The lines do nothing for me. I wish that this dress was solid black because I think women, myself included, would gobble it up. It would be a wardrobe staple. But it’s not. The fabric is not breathable at all and would likely be a great piece of clothing for MMA fighters to drop weight before a weigh-in. What I do love about this dress is the contrasting light blue cuffs and collar.
Orange is the new black, right? Prisoners definitely don’t get the option of wearing full lace shirts but some might wish they could! This skirt is long and extremely full. The outer lace fabric is a decent weight which creates some nice natural draping but the underskirt is pretty thin. That being said, it’s the exact same orange as the outer fabric which is a plus and it’s not super sheer. It also has pockets which is great for anyone who either doesn’t know what to do with their hands or is caring a phone or business cards. Boss ladies be networking and multi-tasking! Strangely, this skirt is also not on the website so I can’t link to it for those of you that are interested.
I paired it with the black dotted shirt that I tried on in my last BR post because I would wear them together. This skirt is extremely versatile and could be worn so many ways. If I was a member of the NDP (a left-wing Canadian political party whose colour is orange) I would buy this skirt in a flash. But since I’m not and I felt like it was just a little too full for my liking this skirt will have to find another very deserving home.
Here are my four favourites from this edition of my Banana Republic fitting room posts! One dress and three shirts. And yes, the orange and white striped shirt didn’t appear in the post because I forgot to take pictures of me in it. It’s also a permanent sale item which made it a score at only $13.
I found out from the lovely sales associates at the store that they aren’t expecting their next big product delivery until the second week of March so this will be the last fitting room post for this month… So watch out for next month when I show you what’s new! Until then, let me know what you are shopping for in the comments down below!
